Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 6 Recap

In this recap, I am going to share what we did at home for more hands-on learning related to Classical Conversations Cycle 1 Week 6: Bible, History, Geography, and Science memory work. I will also share my tutor plans and library books.

BIBLE:

Resources: Foundations of the Bible vol. 1

This week, we learned about the Tower of Babel. We learned that the structure was probably more like an ancient ziggurat than the circular tower we see in art. We learned about bitumen pits and how the bricks were made to withstand water. We also learned about the division of language and how this judgment still impacts us today.

Note: This study pairs with each week of the CC optional Bible memory work, but you can go at your own pace because there is SO much to learn. You can also jump in at any time. Anyone can do this study, not just CC families. Learn more about the Foundations collection here.

HISTORY:

Resources: Story of the World Book Cycle 1 (Match Up List) | Story of the World Series | Real Cool History for Kids Podcast  —  Chronological episode guide here
Activity: Draw a Greek vase on orange, red, or brown construction paper. Have the kids make a story on their Greek vase like the ancient Greeks did.

We learned about famous Ancient Greeks this week. We read several great books including the Trojan Horse and The Odyssey (written by Homer, a famous poet). After a failed attempt at clay pottery, we opted to draw a Greek vase instead. The kids drew a story on their pottery like the Ancient Greeks. While they were drawing, I read from the related Story of the World chapter and from Tales From the Odyssey.

SCIENCE:

Resources: Learning with Friends Year 1 Bundle (code GRACEFRIENDS for 10% off) |  CC Connected Sandbox File | Kim Vieley Science Cards
Activity: LWF Play Dough Vertebrate Experiment

This week, we learned about vertebrates. Our hands-on activity from Learning with Friends was to make two play dough animals the same size, but one had to have a backbone with straws or pipe cleaners. We then tested which animal could hold more weight on its back.

GEOGRAPHY:

Resources: Trace black line maps from CC sandbox | Drawing Africa | Keppel Trifold Maps on CC Connected
Activity: Trace maps daily, Make a recipe from the region (Crockpot Recipes) | Half-Baked Harvest Greek Chicken

It’s nice that the history and geography pair well this week — both are related to Ancient Greece. We sang the new geography memory work to the tune “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” We made Greek Chicken from a Half-Baked Harvest Recipe. It was easy and delicious!

LIBRARY BOOKS:

Here are some books related to the weekly memory work.

  • Greece by Kristine Spanier (Geography)
  • The Iguanodon's Horn by Sean Rubin (Science)
  • Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor by Patricia Valdez (Science)
  • The Trojan Horse by Warwick Hutton (History + Essentials WK5)
  • The Variety of Life by Nicola Davies (Science)
  • The Tower of Babel by Arch Books (Bible)
  • Tales From The Odyssey by Mary Pope Osborne (History, Geography, Essentials WK5)

TUTOR PLANS:

How to Make a Tutor Board  | Week 6 Tutor Plans | Blank Tutor Template

Here is my tutor board for week 6.

Things that worked well for my class this week (Abecedarians):

  • History: Changed words in history sentence to silly words
  • History: Underlined the word "famous" on my board and every time they heard that word in the song they had to jump. Great for littles because it is simple.
  • English: They love the preposition song and hand motions. So impressed with how much they remember.
  • Timeline: Tape rock, paper, and scissors on the cards and let the kids try to beat the cards as we review.
  • Review: Play the pot of soup game. They answer questions and get to take turns picking a new ingredient to put in the soup. It's very simple, but they seem to really enjoy this.
  • Hands-on Science: I shared extra optical illusions as a warm up and they LOVED it! Shared on my tutor plans.

    YOUTUBE PLAYLIST:

    Week 6 Playlist

I created my first YouTube channel to record all the songs and hand motions I want to use with the kids. I've compiled each subject's songs into a weekly playlist. I create this primarily to help the parents in my class review the motions with their kids at home. This is a great resource for other tutors to use to build their plans for the week.

We are taking the next week off of school. We do 6 weeks at a time and then take a 1-week break. I'll be planning Weeks 7 - 12 during our week off.

Hope you have a great week!
