Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 21 Recap

Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 21 Recap

In this recap, I am going to share what we did at home for more hands-on learning related to Classical Conversations Cycle 1 Week 21: Bible, History, Geography, and Science memory work. I will also share my tutor plans and library books.

BIBLE:

Resources: Foundations of the Bible vol. 1  | Free Sample

For Week 21, we finished learning about the different Jewish feasts. We looked at the Day of Atonement and the Feast of Booths. We also explored the history of three additional Jewish feasts that hold significant historical meaning, such as Hanukkah and Purim. My favorite part of this lesson was seeing how we can see Jesus in the feasts. There are such great life lessons to be found in them.

Note: This study pairs with each week of the CC optional Bible memory work, but you can go at your own pace because there is SO much to learn. You can also jump in at any time. Anyone can do this study, not just CC families. Learn more about the Foundations Collection here.

HISTORY:

Resources: Story of the World Book Cycle 1 (Match Up List) | Story of the World Series | Real Cool History for Kids Podcast  —  Chronological episode guide here,
Activity: Paint maple leaf, Maple Leaf String Art, Write in these narration journals

Our history lesson focused on the exploration of Canada. We learned about John Cabot and Samuel de Champlain—both of their stories can be found in The Story of the World books. We enjoy writing in our narration journals after finishing our history lesson. The kids can either share interesting facts they learned or copy the memory sentence.

The activities suggested above can also be used for next week's history, so pick one for this week and try the other one the following week.

SCIENCE:

Resources: Learning with Friends Year 1 Bundle (code GRACEFRIENDS for 10% off) |  CC Connected Sandbox File | Trifold Printouts
Activity: Learning with Friends Thermometer, Draw the latitude lines on a map

For science, the kids colored and labeled the different lines of latitude using the Scribblers coloring sheet. We also made a thermometer using the Learning with Friends curriculum. You're supposed to carry the container to different areas of the house or outside to change the temperature. I accidentally left my glass in the oven—and really got to see it in action when the oven started preheating for dinner!

GEOGRAPHY:

Resources: Trace black line maps from CC sandbox | Keppel Trifold Maps on CC Connected
Activity: Trace maps daily, make Beaver tails, or Make Week 21 Crockpot Recipe

This week, we learned about the different Canadian bodies of water. We continued singing the song to the tune of Yankee Doodle. We had planned to make beaver tails (a fried pastry dough recipe) but haven’t had the chance yet. I linked the recipe I plan on trying—it looks delicious!

TUTOR PLANS:

How to Make a Tutor Board  | Week 21 Tutor Plans | Blank Tutor Template

Here is my tutor board for Week 21. We are doing mineral tests during hands-on science for weeks 21 and 22. I made a worksheet to help my class with the process, and it worked so well—even my 5-year-olds were able to participate using it! My friends who tutor the older levels said it really helped their class too! I have it in my tutor plans for you.

Note: I am not sure if we all (nationwide) have the same minerals in our tutor kits. Therefore, I created a blank mineral sheet version in case you have different ones to test. Having the images on the sheet was very helpful. My class loved trying to match the mineral I was showing them with the one on their sheet. I provided a variety of worksheet options so just scroll through the PDF and choose which one works for you :)

        YOUTUBE PLAYLIST:

        Week 21 Playlist

Here is a weekly playlist of all the songs and hand motions I use with my kids. This is a great resource for other tutors to use to build their plans for the week.
