Classical Conversations Cycle 3: Week 20 Recap

In this recap, I am going to share what we did at home for more hands-on learning related to Classical Conversations Cycle 3 Week 20: Bible, History, Geography, and Science memory work. I will also link our favorite picture books, my tutor board, and a preview of my week 21 plans.

BIBLE:
Resource: Foundations of the Bible vol.3  |  Bible Memory Songs  |  Hymnology Cards

For week 20, we learned who Peter and Paul shared the gospel with. Peter spread the gospel to the Jews and Paul to the Gentiles. We also learned about each of Paul’s three missionary journeys and his imprisonment in Rome. This week, we basically surveyed the entire book of Acts.

Note: This study pairs with each week of the CC optional Bible memory work, but you can go at your own pace because there is SO much to learn. You can also jump in at any time — it’s not too late. Anyone can do this study, not just CC families. Learn more about the Foundations collection here.

HISTORY:
Resources: Story of the World Book (Match Up List) | Story of the World Series | Real Cool History for Kids Podcast

Activity: Write a letter to Ruby Bridges (template in Sandbox file) | Watch Ruby Bridges picture book

This week, we learned about Brown v. Board of Education. We read picture books to learn about Ruby Bridges, who was one of the first black children to attend an all-white school. Her story is inspirational, especially how she prayed for the angry mobs yelling at her each day. For our activity, we wrote a letter to 6-year-old Ruby Bridges to encourage her on her first day of school.

    SCIENCE:
Resources: Learning with Friends Year 3 Bundle |  CC Connected Sandbox File
Activity: Paint galaxy images with this tutorial

This week, we learned how the heavens declare the glory of God! To bring this lesson to life, I had the kids look at James Webb Telescope images of nebulas and galaxies. Then we painted our own with a fun tutorial I found online. For my class, I passed around the galaxy images for the kids to look at while we sang our memory sentence.

    GEOGRAPHY:
Resources: CC Sandbox Geography page |  Drawing the USA Natural Wonders
Activity: Draw canals on free USA natural wonders map
Videos: Chesapeake & Ohio Canal  |  Ohio & Erie and Miami & Erie Canal

This week, we learned about different canals in the USA. We identified them on our map using the Draw the USA book. We also watched a few videos about canals to understand how and why they were made. Details on the blog!

      TUTOR PLANS:

Here is what I did with my class of 8-9 year olds.

Math: Sang the geometry song while doing “mathercise.” (jumping jacks, lunges, etc.)

English: Sang the sentence to the tune BINGO. We made "claws" with our hands for "clause" and the kids had to yell clause as loud as they could at the end.

History: Taught the song and hand motions, and then read the sentence with silly words. They made me save this subject for last because it's they're favorite.

Science: We sang the memory work to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (on my YouTube). I printed out galaxy images from the James Webb Telescope and passed them around one at a time while we sang the song.

Latin: Taught the kids hand motions and played musical chairs to the Kings Thing song. I have 2 less chairs than there are kids so 2 kids get out each time (makes the game go faster). The first and second place winners get to go first for presentation.

Geography: We sang the memory work to "You Are My Sunshine" and had each of the kids map the canals on the black line master.

Timeline: Our community enjoys doing the hand motions, so I read the new sentences and then taught all the hand motions. Then we sing and do it all together.

      YOUTUBE PLAYLIST:  Week 20 Playlist

I created my first YouTube channel to record all the songs and hand motions I want to use with the kids. I've compiled each subject's songs into a weekly playlist. I create this primarily to help the parents in my class review the motions with their kids at home. I also think this is a great resource for other tutors to use to build their plans for the week.
