Lifeway Stats That Show Why Biblical Literacy Matters

These numbers are sobering.
According to recent Lifeway and Ligonier research, the majority of Americans hold beliefs that directly contradict core Christian doctrine. We’re not just talking about misunderstandings. The stats reveal contradictions to foundational truths about who God is, who Jesus is, what Scripture is, and how salvation works.
Here are just a few of the statistics:
-
70% do not believe Jesus is God
-
82% do not believe the Holy Spirit is a personal being
-
86% believe people are good by nature
-
66% believe our works make us righteous
-
71% do not believe the Bible is literally true
-
72% believe the Bible is not authoritative
These are core beliefs that shape how people live, parent, vote, suffer, hope, and respond to truth and daily life.

What Is Biblical Literacy
Bible literacy is about how we know God through His Word. It involves understanding who He is, what He has revealed, and how Scripture fits together as a whole.
A biblically literate person understands the overarching story of the Bible, from creation to restoration. They recognize how God’s promises unfold through Scripture and how every part points to Christ. Over time, this understanding shapes belief, trust, and daily living.
Bible literacy also includes learning how to read Scripture. Paying attention to context. Recognizing different types of writing such as history, poetry, prophecy, and letters. Allowing God’s Word to guide our interpretation rather than personal opinion or cultural influence.
I love how Pastor Matt Chandler puts it, “[Scripture] cannot mean for us what it did not mean for them.” Meaning that when we read Scripture, we are called to understand it as it was originally given, within its context and intended meaning, before applying it to our lives today.
Within families, Bible literacy often begins in very ordinary ways. Opening Scripture regularly. Reading together. Asking good questions. Going to God’s Word when life feels hard or heavy, or when you walk through a season of uncertainty. These small, consistent practices form a foundation of belief over time. Even living this out in front of your children makes a significant impact on their lives.
In fact, research shows that the single greatest influence on a person’s spiritual health is regular Bible reading while growing up, contributing strongly to a lifetime of faith
This is why Bible literacy matters. Developing familiarity with Scripture helps believers recognize truth, discern teaching, and remain anchored in God’s Word when competing voices are loud. God’s Word becomes a steady reference point for faith, development, and decision-making.
In a world filled with many messages, Bible literacy anchors our hearts to what is enduring and true.
Why This Matters
Biblical literacy is not being able to recite facts about the Bible and being able to spit them out at any given moment. The goal is to know who God is as He has revealed Himself. When Scripture is misunderstood or sidelined, the gospel itself becomes distorted.
If Jesus is not fully God, His sacrifice loses its power.
If the Holy Spirit is not personal, believers lose guidance and comfort.
If people are naturally good, repentance feels unnecessary.
If works save us, grace becomes meaningless.
If the Bible is not true or authoritative, truth becomes negotiable.
The Role of Parents
If these statistics feel overwhelming, let me encourage you…
Belief formation starts at home, and it’s a whole lot more ordinary than you might think. It’s a long road of faithful obedience in the small things. Practicing your own faith right in front of your family.
Scripture calls parents to teach God’s Word diligently:
“You shall teach them diligently to your children… when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way.” Deuteronomy 6:7
Mothers and fathers have immense influence. Ordinary moments with open Bibles shape theology more than we often realize.
What Scripture Actually Says
God has not left us guessing.
Jesus is fully God.
The Holy Spirit teaches and leads.
Humanity is fallen but redeemable.
Salvation is by grace through faith.
Scripture is breathed out by God and stands forever.
When children grow up regularly hearing these truths, we make room for belief to take root in their hearts.

A Call to Faithfulness
Changing these statistics is possible! But it does require intentionality and faithfulness from us. It requires patience, presence, faithful teaching, repetition, and prayer. Ultimately, it requires trust that God honors the obedience inside the four walls of our homes.
This is why biblical literacy matters.
This is why Scripture-centered discipleship matters.
This is why you, parents, matter.
Save these statistics. Pray over them. Then open God’s Word with your children and trust Him to do what only He can do.
A Prayer for Our Nation
Lord,
We come to You with humble hearts, aware of how far we have wandered from Your truth. We confess that we have often trusted our own understanding more than Your Holy Word and we’ve allowed voices that aren’t Yours to shape what we believe.
Turn our hearts back to You.
Where truth has been blurred or blatantly ignored, restore a reverence for Your Word. Where maybe confusion has taken root, bring us clarity through the Holy Spirit. Where pride has replaced repentance, would you lead us back to a place of humility?
Father, strengthen our families and homes. Give parents the courage to open Scripture daily, to teach what is true, and to model faithfulness even when it feels challenging. Help us remember that the work we do within our walls is important.
Raise up a generation that knows You, loves You, and walks in Your truth. Let Your Word be the authority over our nation. Let Your Spirit guide your people. Let Your grace cover us.
We are undeserving, but You are so faithful. We ask all this in your Holy name.
Amen.
