Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 10 Recap

Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 10 Recap

In this recap, I am going to share what we did at home for more hands-on learning related to Classical Conversations Cycle 1 Week 10: Bible, History, Geography, and Science memory work. I will also share my tutor plans and library books.

BIBLE:

Resources: Foundations of the Bible vol. 1  | Free Sample

This week, we learned about Isaac — Abraham’s promised son through Sarah. Abraham and Sarah had to wait 25 years for their promised son to be born. Through Isaac, Jacob would be born, who would establish the nation of Israel. More importantly, the Savior of the world would be born through their family lineage.

Note: This study pairs with each week of the CC optional Bible memory work, but you can go at your own pace because there is SO much to learn. You can also jump in at any time. Anyone can do this study, not just CC families. Learn more about the Foundations collection here.

HISTORY:

Resources: Story of the World Book Cycle 1 (Match Up List) | Story of the World Series | Real Cool History for Kids Podcast  —  Chronological episode guide here
Activity: Color scribblers page, write a haiku

We learned about Japan’s Heian period. We read the related chapter in Story of the World and learned more about samurais. We also learned about haiku poetry, which originated in Japan. The kids wrote a haiku about Japan for their narration.

SCIENCE:

Resources: Learning with Friends Year 1 Bundle (code GRACEFRIENDS for 10% off) |  CC Connected Sandbox File | Kim Vieley Science Cards | Trifold Print outs
Activity: leaf scavenger hunt, leaf garland

We used the trifold printable from CC Connected to see all the different leaf shapes. The kids went outside and found as many leaf shapes as they could. In years past, we’ve dipped the leaves in beeswax to make our own fall garland. We sang the memory work to the catchy tune “supercalifragilistic” and colored the scribblers page.

GEOGRAPHY:

Resources: Trace black line maps from CC sandbox | Drawing Africa | Keppel Trifold Maps on CC Connected
Activity: Trace maps daily, Make a recipe from the region (Crockpot Recipes) — Ramen Recipe

This week, we learned about Japan and made a homemade ramen soup. It was really good and easy! The kids traced their trifold maps from CC Connected each morning. We sang the geography memory work to “Pop Goes the Weasel.”

For the ramen recipe, although it's a 3 hour slow cooker recipe, you can make it in a pot in about an hour, which is what I did.

LIBRARY BOOKS:

Here are some books that relate to this week’s memory work. A few books I still need to read through but sharing for ideas.

TUTOR PLANS:

How to Make a Tutor Board  | Week 10 Tutor Plans | Blank Tutor Template |

Here is my tutor board for week 10.

      YOUTUBE PLAYLIST:

      Week 10 Playlist

I created my first YouTube channel to record all the songs and hand motions I want to use with the kids. I've compiled each subject's songs into a weekly playlist. I create this primarily to help the parents in my class review the motions with their kids at home. This is a great resource for other tutors to use to build their plans for the week.

      PREVIEW: WEEK 11 PLANS

Here's a look at what we plan on doing for Week 11.
