Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 3 Recap

Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 3 Recap

In this recap, I am going to share what we did at home for more hands-on learning related to Classical Conversations Cycle 1 Week 3: Bible, History, Geography, and Science memory work. I will also share my tutor plans and library books.

BIBLE:

Resources: Foundations of the Bible vol. 1

For Week 3, we learned about Adam and Eve and their sin in the garden. We really went deeper into the story and learned about Eve’s deception, Adam’s disobedience, and the consequences for all mankind as a result. More importantly, we learned about the Redeemer prophesied in Genesis 3:15 — let me tell you about my Jesus. :)

Note: This study pairs with each week of the CC optional Bible memory work, but you can go at your own pace because there is SO much to learn. You can also jump in at any time. Anyone can do this study, not just CC families. Learn more about the Foundations collection here.

HISTORY:

Resources: Story of the World Book Cycle 1 (Match Up List) | Story of the World Series | Real Cool History for Kids Podcast  —  Chronological episode guide here
Activity: Bingo

This week, we learned about the Greek and Roman gods. A fun way to remember their names is by playing bingo. I made bingo cards and have them linked above. It’s fun for all ages! We read the related chapter in Story of the World (ch. 23) as well as picture books. We also watched Hercules for our family movie night.

SCIENCE:

Resources: Learning with Friends Year 1 Bundle (code GRACEFRIENDS for 10% off) |  CC Connected Sandbox File | Kim Vieley Science Cards
Activity: Watercolor Animal Cell

This week, we learned about animal cells. We decided to draw an animal cell and paint it with watercolor paint. This is a great way to help memorize the different names of the cell. It’s perfect for all ages. We used the science flashcards from Kimberly Vieley's shop as our guide.

GEOGRAPHY:

Resources: Trace black line maps from CC sandbox | Drawing Africa | Keppel Trifold Maps on CC Connected
Activity: Trace maps daily, Make a recipe from the region (Crockpot Recipes), Israeli Chili

This week, we learned about the Hebrew Empire. The kids traced the map pictured above each morning in a sheet protector. The maps are linked above. For dinner, we made an Israeli chili with ground lamb. It was so good! The kids also made unleavened bread all by themselves.

LIBRARY BOOKS:

Here are some books related to the weekly memory work.

  • Ancient World Magnified by David Long (Geography)
  • Cells: an owner's handbook by Carolyn Fisher (Science)
  • Israel by Kristine Spanier (Geography)
  • The gods and goddesses of Olympus by Aliki (History)
  • God's Very Good Idea by Trillia J. Newbell (Bible)
  • Falling into Sin by Arch Books (Bible)
  • Young Zeus by Brian Karas (History) - My kids really enjoyed this story, but I will caution if you have sensitive kids, the Greek mythology of Zeus' dad eating his children might be off-putting. The graphic can be alarming for sensitive readers. My kids (9, 6, and 3) handled it fine, but I just want to share in case :)

    TUTOR PLANS:

How to Make a Tutor Board  | Week 3 Tutor Plans | Blank Tutor Template | Candy Land Review Game

Here is my tutor board for week 3.

I made a Candy Land review game that you can use at home or as a tutor for review.

    YOUTUBE PLAYLIST:

    Week 3 Playlist

I created my first YouTube channel to record all the songs and hand motions I want to use with the kids. I've compiled each subject's songs into a weekly playlist. I create this primarily to help the parents in my class review the motions with their kids at home. This is a great resource for other tutors to use to build their plans for the week.

    PREVIEW: WEEK 4 PLANS

Here's a look at what we plan on doing for Week 4.
