Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 18 Recap

Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 18 Recap

In this recap, I am going to share what we did at home for more hands-on learning related to Classical Conversations Cycle 1 Week 18: Bible, History, Geography, and Science memory work. I will also share my tutor plans and library books.

BIBLE:

Resources: Foundations of the Bible vol. 1  | Free Sample

We wrapped up learning about the ten plagues of Egypt. We had a great discussion about the 9th plague (darkness). Egypt was covered in darkness for three days, and the Bible describes it as a thick darkness that could be felt. I took the kids to a room in our house where there is no light and had us sit in there for a moment to see how dark it might have been. Interestingly, if there is no source of light, your eyes will not be able to adjust. It's just heavy darkness. You see why the Egyptians couldn't move for three days because they literally could not see in front of them. They wouldn't be able to prepare food or do anything. We also discussed Passover, which was a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ's sacrifice. We'll explore the feasts in more detail in the coming weeks with the study!

Note: This study pairs with each week of the CC optional Bible memory work, but you can go at your own pace because there is SO much to learn. You can also jump in at any time. Anyone can do this study, not just CC families. Learn more about the Foundations Collection here.

HISTORY:

Resources: Story of the World Book Cycle 1 (Match Up List) | Story of the World Series | Real Cool History for Kids Podcast  —  Chronological episode guide here,
Activity: TPT Mound Builder PDF, Hopewell Video, Write in these narration journals,

For history, we learned about the mound-building civilizations in North America. It was tough to find good resources to delve deeper into our history lesson, so I bought a PDF off TPT for $2.50. We also watched a great YouTube video about the Hopewell mounds.

Additional articles you can read about the Mound-builders:

SCIENCE:

Resources: Learning with Friends Year 1 Bundle (code GRACEFRIENDS for 10% off) |  CC Connected Sandbox File | Trifold Printouts
Activity: Sound Waves with LWF, Draw the ocean floor

For science, we learned about the four types of ocean floor and added some art by drawing the ocean floor. We also did a sound waves experiment by Learning with Friends. It's a simple and quick experiment using rice. We read two great books about the woman who helped discover the mid-ocean ridge, and I’ve linked them in the library book section!

GEOGRAPHY:

Resources: Trace black line maps from CC sandbox | Keppel Trifold Maps on CC Connected
Activity: Trace maps daily. Make Week 18 Crockpot Recipe

This week's geography is about the Mesoamerican regions. We sang our geography to the same tune as the Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs history song. For our recipe, we made the slow cooker chicken mole dinner.

LIBRARY BOOKS:

Here are some books that relate to this week’s memory work.

  1. Marie's Ocean: Marie Tharp maps the mountains under the sea by Josie James (Science) — this book covers so much of our science memory work! As with most science books, it does discuss "millions of years," but I just say "many years" when I read it :) I also can't help but think of the impacts The Flood would have had on the earth's form because the water burst from the ground and from the sky. It would have been catastrophic to the structure of the earth. So you can discuss that too as you read their theories.
  2. Ocean speaks: how Marie Tharp revealed the ocean's biggest secret by Jess Keating (Science)
  3. The Genius of the Maya by Izzi Howell (Geography)
  4. Ancient Aztecs by Emily Rose Oachs (Geography)
  5. The Ten Plagues by Arch Books (Bible)

TUTOR PLANS:

How to Make a Tutor Board  | Week 18 Tutor Plans | Blank Tutor Template

Here is my tutor board for Week 18.

        YOUTUBE PLAYLIST:

        Week 18 Playlist

Here is a weekly playlist of all the songs and hand motions I use with my kids. This is a great resource for other tutors to use to build their plans for the week.

        PREVIEW:

No preview this week because I'll be spending our 2-week break planning for the final quarter :) Our community resumes March 6th, so my Week 19 recap will be available March 9th! I can't believe we are already almost finished with another CC year!
