BIBLE:

Resources: Foundations of the Bible vol. 1  | Free Sample

This week, we learned about Job. Job was a godly man who loved the Lord. He prayed on behalf of his children, was generous with his riches, and was well-known in his community. God allowed Satan to bring suffering to Job’s life as a way to test Job’s faith. Job’s story is encouraging, especially for those going through deep troubles. It reminds us to remain steadfast in our faith in God!

I love Job 1:21 which says, "Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will leave this life. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord." (NLT)

Note: This study pairs with each week of the CC optional Bible memory work, but you can go at your own pace because there is SO much to learn. You can also jump in at any time. Anyone can do this study, not just CC families. Learn more about the Foundations collection here.

HISTORY:

Resources: Story of the World Book Cycle 1 (Match Up List) | Story of the World Series | Real Cool History for Kids Podcast  —  Chronological episode guide here
Activity: Make salt from saltwater, go on a long walk like Gandhi, Bedtime History Podcast - Gandhi

We learned about the Age of Imperialism. We specifically focused on learning more about Gandhi and the salt march. We made saltwater and boiled it to replicate how Gandhi would have made his own salt due to the British tax. We also read Story of the World (Vol. 4) and a picture book about Gandhi.

Saltwater Experiment: If you live near an ocean, get some water straight from the ocean. If you don't live near an ocean, make your own with salt and water. We made it really salty and then boiled the water until it all evaporated. The only thing left was the salt. Great way to show the kids how the people of India would have gathered their own salt to avoid the tax.

SCIENCE:

Resources: Learning with Friends Year 1 Bundle (code GRACEFRIENDS for 10% off) |  CC Connected Sandbox File | Kim Vieley Science Cards
Activity: Germinate different seed types, go on a nature walk to find pinecone seeds

This week, we learned about the different types of seed plants:
monocot, dicot, and conifer. We tried to germinate each type of seed using a corn kernel for monocot, a lima bean for dicot, and a pinecone seed for conifer. We went on a small walk to find some pinecones and crack them open to get the seeds.

GEOGRAPHY:

Resources: Trace black line maps from CC sandbox | Drawing Africa | Keppel Trifold Maps on CC Connected
Activity: Trace maps daily, Make a recipe from the region (Crockpot Recipes)

We learned about the Indus River Valley, which directly relates to our history topic this week. We did map tracing and made an Indian-inspired dish that was delicious. We are 8/8 on these geography recipes!

LIBRARY BOOKS:

Here are some books that relate to this week’s memory work.

  • I Am Gandhi by Brad Meltzer (History)
  • Living in India by Chloe Perkins (Geography)
  • Himalaya by Soledad Romero Marino (Geography)
  • Be the Change by Arun Gandhi (History)
  • Corn by Cecelia Brannon (Science)

TUTOR PLANS:

How to Make a Tutor Board  | Week 8 Tutor Plans | Blank Tutor Template | Scavenger Hunts

Here is my tutor board for week 8.

      YOUTUBE PLAYLIST:

      Week 8 Playlist

I created my first YouTube channel to record all the songs and hand motions I want to use with the kids. I've compiled each subject's songs into a weekly playlist. I create this primarily to help the parents in my class review the motions with their kids at home. This is a great resource for other tutors to use to build their plans for the week.
