Classical Conversations Cycle 1: Week 9 Recap

In this recap, I am going to share what we did at home for more hands-on learning related to Classical Conversations Cycle 1 Week 9: Bible, History, Geography, and Science memory work. I will also share my tutor plans and library books.

BIBLE:

This week, we learned about Ishmael, Abraham’s son through Hagar. We learned about Ishmael’s life and his legacy. He settled in the Arabian desert and is who the religion of Islam traces themselves back through to Abraham. Interestingly, his daughter married Esau, Jacob’s brother. I love that our Bible topic connected to the timeline this week, too.

Note: This study pairs with each week of the CC optional Bible memory work, but you can go at your own pace because there is SO much to learn. You can also jump in at any time. Anyone can do this study, not just CC families. Learn more about the Foundations collection here.

HISTORY:

Activity: Color scribblers page, draw and learn about yin yang symbol for Taoism, make mint tea   

This week, we learned about Lao-Tsu and Confucius in China. We read the related chapter from Vol. 1 Story of the World. We also listened to the Real Cool History for Kids ancient China podcast (linked above). The kids colored the scribbler’s coloring sheet while listening to the reading. You could also learn more about the yin yang symbol which represents Taoism.

SCIENCE:

Activity: observe a plant, color a carnation or celery with food coloring in the water

Science was nice and simple this week as we learned about the parts of a plant. We used the seeds we planted the previous week for our observation of leaves, stems, and roots. We tried the celery in food coloring, but you could also do carnations in food coloring to watch their petals change color as their roots drink the water.

GEOGRAPHY:

Activity: Trace maps daily, Make a recipe from the region (Crockpot Recipes)

This week, we learned about China and made a Mongolian beef and broccoli dinner. The kids traced their trifold maps from CC Connected each morning. We also enjoyed watching Mulan to make our movie night connect with China for the history/geography topics.

      I created my first YouTube channel to record all the songs and hand motions I want to use with the kids. I've compiled each subject's songs into a weekly playlist. I create this primarily to help the parents in my class review the motions with their kids at home. This is a great resource for other tutors to use to build their plans for the week.
