Classical Conversations Cycle 2: Week 19 Recap

We are in our last 6 weeks of the school year for Classical Conversations! We love the program, so we are always sad when it comes to an end. I am excited to finish out the year strong!

Bible:
Resource: Foundations of the Bible vol.2
Christ-Centered Easter Study

For Bible this week, we learned about the book of Proverbs. We learned about the main author, Solomon, and what it means to obtain wisdom. I enjoyed reading the Proverbs and discussing them with the kids because they are easy to apply. We are also doing the Christ-Centered Easter study right now. It's our third year working through the Easter study, and I love seeing what details of the story the kids remember each year.

History:
Resource: Story of the World Book 4 - Chapter 33
Activity:   Draw South Korea Flag

This week we learned about the Korean War. We watched some videos and then read from Story of the World book 4 (chapter 33). I love that this week's history relates to the geography we are learning. We grabbed a read-aloud, Brother's Keeper, and we are loving it. It's going to take us several weeks to finish, but it's bringing the history to life.

It's about a family who lives in North Korea, and they decided to try to flee the country during the Korean War. They want to escape communism and experience freedom, knowing their escape could put their life at risk. I'm only 1/3 of the way done, so I don't have a full review. But my 7 year old asks me to read two chapters every night. It's a book that makes you want to keep reading because each chapter leaves you in suspense.

Science:
Resource: Learning with Friends Physics | Science Flash Cards for CC Weeks 13-24
Activity: Shaking sand in a cup by Learning with Friends
Videos: 1st Law of Thermodynamics  |  1st Law of Thermodynamics Biblical perspective

For science, we love to get activity ideas from Learning with Friends. They had a fun activity that had us put sand in a cup and shake it for 5 min. This ended up making the sand turn hot. Our control cup was 49 degrees F, and it became 69 degrees F after shaking for five min. Pretty neat! We also watched a video explaining the first law of thermodynamics since that's not super easy to comprehend. A follower on IG sent me another video from a biblical perspective, and it was so interesting to watch! It uses the 1st law of thermodynamics to disprove evolution. I tagged it in the video section for you.

Geography:
Resources: CC Sandbox Geography page, LeapFrog Globe

We do extra geography review on Mondays. We first work on finding all the countries on the map and with the CC Sanbox printouts. Then we watched a few videos about the countries. I always love to learn about the cultures, landmarks, and other interesting facts about the countries we are learning about. The kids love it, too! Our geography books and videos are probably one of their favorite things.

Language Arts Curriculum:
Resource: All About Reading, All About Spelling, Spectrum Language Arts, Handwriting Without Tears

I thought it would be helpful to share what we do for our Language Arts curriculum. My oldest is in 1st grade, so we primarily focus on learning how to read. We love All About Reading and All About Spelling. Both curriculums have helped tremendously. We use Handwriting Without Tears for penmanship. For grammar, I just purchased an inexpensive book on Amazon to cover punctuation, capitalization, etc.

Math Curriculum:
Resource: Saxon Level 2

For Math, we use Saxon. We've been using Saxon for two years and really enjoy it. For the most part, I feel like it is open and go and minimal prep work. My favorite part is the repetition of math facts so that kids can really grasp the concepts. It is also the recommended math curriculum from CC, so that's why I first chose it. But I also really enjoy the program because it works. It's not pretty and colorful, but that's okay. My son is learning a ton and thinks it's fun!
