Classical Conversations Cycle 2: Week 7 Recap

We just wrapped up week 7 with CC! Here is a recap of some things we did that I hope will be helpful to you.

Bible:
Resource - Foundations of the Bible vol.2 by Driven By Grace

We are learning about the history of Israel and how/why the nation divided into two kingdoms. This is something I honestly never fully grasped until I took the time to really study it. I am so grateful to have a study to help explain these key ideas to my kids at a young age. Understanding the division of the nation of Israel is going to help them grasp the books and language of the Bible in an easier way. Particularly the minor prophets where Israel and Judah are discussed in detail.

Reformation Day Guide by Brighter Day Press

This week we learned about Martin Luther and how he led the reformation for the Christian church. After reading the book of Romans, Luther realized that the only way to receive forgiveness of sins was through faith in Jesus. The Roman Catholic church was teaching that they had to pay money to the church to receive forgiveness of sins, which was problematic for many reasons. First, it's not correct based on scripture. We cannot earn or purchase our way to forgiveness. Jesus paid the full price with His death on the cross. We are forgiven through faith only by God's grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). Second, it made it really hard for the poor to support themselves and not live in fear of having unforgiven sins. So, Martin Luther corrected this theology with 95 Theses nailed to the church doors on October 31, 1517. He chose Oct 31st because he knew the next day the church would be full of people celebrating All Saints Day (Nov 1st) and they would see his 95 Theses.

We read from Story of the World book 2 (ch. 34) and used Brighter Day Press' Reformation guide. You can make these cute chocolate hammers, color a Lutheran Rose, and several other craft ideas from her study.

Science:
Resource: Learning with Friends Ecology unit, week 7

After learning about the 6 different types of pollution, we made an oil spill in a body of water. This activity was recommended in our Learning with Friends Ecology bundle. I love their resource for additional activity ideas.

Library Books:

We checked out two books this week and they were both great. The Martin Luther book explains his full life story from childhood to adulthood. It's a longer picture book that you would probably read over a couple of days. The pollution book explained all the different types of pollution and ways that you can make changes. My kids were very interested in learning about pollution.

Reading:
Resource: All About Reading

In case you are looking for a reading program, I wanted to share about the one we use. We made the switch mid-way through last year, and I am so glad we did. We use a program called All About Reading. It was been super successful for my son. We generally split one lesson into two days. We just finished Level 1 last week and began Level 2. What I love the most is how the lessons build on one another and the program really emphasizes fluency. It's helped build my 7-year old's confidence in reading and making him eager to learn!
